Hospitals and physician groups in the government's accountable care organization initiative are reporting cost savings from providing better quality care and reducing readmissions. The program could save up to $1.9 billion from 2012 to 2015, the government says. Mount Sinai Hospital in New York has cut emergency department visits by high-risk patients by 54%, and Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey last year saved $16 million on Medicare patients in its accountable care program.
