Women who took iron supplements while pregnant had a 19% lower chance of having low birth weight babies compared with those who did not take the supplements, according to a study in the journal BMJ. Iron supplementation elevated pregnant women's hemoglobin concentration by 4.6 grams per liter as well as reduced the odds of developing anemia by 50%, researchers said.
