As part of a new $100 million initiative to combat disease in the world's poorest countries, five Japanese drug companies are opening their medical databases so that outside researchers can search them for promising new treatments for such infectious diseases as malaria and tuberculosis. The Japanese companies are Astellas Pharma, Daiichi Sankyo, Eisai, Shionogi and Takeda Pharmaceutical.
