About 40% of Oklahoma residents were not seen by a dentist or dental clinic over the past year, according to 2010 data from the CDC, while 25% of adults 65 and older have had their natural teeth extracted, and about 60% of third-graders had tooth decay or cavities. About half of Oklahoma residents do not have dental insurance, and the state's Medicaid program provides limited dental coverage to adults. Moreover, 56 counties are designated as dental health shortage areas, and four of those have no dentists.
