A study suggests that the link between obesity and cancer may be attributed to the presence of a gut bacteria that helps drive cancer development. The study involved obese and lean mice exposed to a carcinogen at birth and found that the obese mice had higher levels of a gut microbe byproduct called deoxycholic acid, which is known to damage DNA and is associated with some human cancers. The findings suggest that obesity, rather than diet, is the link to cancer.
