The Mayo Clinic has received federal approval for a stem cell trial that will use babies' own umbilical cords to treat heart defects such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. The trial, considered as the first of its kind, will commence upon enrollment of 10 eligible patients. Dr. Harold Burkhart, who will head the surgeries in the study, said that at the Mayo Clinic, about 9 out of 10 survive the procedures.
