A United Way-backed literacy program has helped improve reading scores on classroom assessments -- for example, one Michigan elementary school saw an increase from 56% last school year to 74% of this year's first-graders who are reading at grade level. The program, in multiple districts, includes teacher training, reading coaches and weekly visits with volunteer reading "buddies" for students. "In our data before, we couldn't even get off of first base and now we're getting kids even further than where they need to be," Battle Creek Public Schools Superintendent Linda Hicks said.
