An HHS Office of the Inspector General report finds that data gleaned from the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System were inaccurate in 48% of records and incomplete in 9% of records. Data from the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System also were found to be inaccurate in 58% of records and incomplete in about 4% of records. To address the issue, the report offered recommendations such as requiring Medicare Administrative Contractors to adopt program integrity safeguards.
