A study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry found that patients with major depression who had an overactive insula, a brain area associated with emotional processing, showed improvement following medication, but not talk therapy, while those with an underactive insula showed the opposite outcome. Researchers used PET scans to evaluate patients' brain activity. If the findings are validated, they could allow for the use of PET imaging to determine the best treatment for certain patients, a researcher said.
