Patients with inflammatory bowel disease may want to discontinue treatment once they achieve remission but Dr. David Rubin of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at the University of Chicago says it is important to remember IBD is a chronic disease and stopping therapy can lead to recurrence. Physicians say there are limited data on even de-escalating treatments. There may be some cases in which scaling back is appropriate, but the science is still emerging, Rubin and others said.
