Siemens is looking into the detachment of one of its 170-foot blades from a wind turbine east of San Diego, a rare occurrence among the latest models. "Thirty years ago, having a blade separate from a turbine was not that uncommon, but there has just been tremendous improvements in the development process for wind turbines, both from our ability to analyze how the structures would behave using computer modeling and in terms of the type of testing that’s required now," said Ford Felker, director of the National Wind Technology Center. Siemans is doing a root cause analysis of the event.
