Adult men who are sleep-deprived during the workweek can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes if they catch up on their sleep on the weekends. A study led by Peter Liu of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute found that such restorative weekend sleep increased the subject's insulin sensitivity -- the ability to clear blood sugar from their system -- compared with those who continued to have a sleep deficit. The findings were presented at the annual meeting of The Endocrine Society.
