More than 500 people with resistant hypertension will participate in a study aimed at assessing the efficacy of renal denervation, which uses a catheter to direct radiofrequency waves at specific nerves in the kidneys involved with the physiological fight-or-flight response. "Interrupting that signal makes physiologic sense," said SCAI fellow Dr. Manesh Patel, an interventional cardiologist at Duke University, which is one of the 60 study sites.
