About 800 students in the Phoenix area are taking accelerated courses this summer hosted by the Tempe Union High School District. Students in fourth grade and higher can earn extra academic credits in English and math, and gain additional experience in classes ranging from engineering to speech and debate. "They are here because they know what the opportunities are and they are looking not only into the next grade level, but also college," said Jeff Baluch, teacher and administrator of the math academy.
