A survey of 225 facilities conducting SPECT bone scans and 95 using whole-body FDG-PET found that radiation dose use at most centers falls within broadly accepted levels. "The good news is that for most of the facilities, they are injecting on average approximately 25 mCi, which is right in the center of recommended dosage," said lead researcher Adam Alessio of the University of Washington. The study, a joint effort of the SNMMI dose optimization task force and the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission, found that many imaging facilities employing low levels of ionizing radiation are adopting diagnostic reference levels to detect high radiation doses or using DRLs for quality and dose optimization. The findings were presented at the SNMMI Annual Meeting.
