A robot developed in Switzerland mimics the leg motion of cats to maneuver over rough terrain. Each leg of the robot from the Biorobotics Lab at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne is composed of three sections that mirror cat limbs, incorporating springs that act like tendons and motors to provide locomotive force. "This morphology gives the robot the mechanical properties from which cats benefit, that's to say a marked running ability and elasticity in the right spots, to ensure stability," says Alexander Sprowitz, a scientist at the lab.
