A new resource developed in partnership with school nutrition professionals in Vermont seeks to help schools serve more local, fresh foods. The cookbook, "New School Cuisine: Nutritious and Seasonal Recipes for School Cooks by School Cooks," includes recipes, such as chicken vegetable curry and strawberry spinach salad, that have passed student taste tests. Tips for introducing recipes and purchasing local foods also are included in the book.
The San Diego school board on Tuesday will consider whether to adopt "Meatless Mondays" for elementary and K-8 schools beginning in the fall. Schools already serve a meatless option each day, but if the proposal is approved, the dishes would become staples on Mondays in an effort to promote nutrition and curb childhood obesity.
France will prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes in public by making e-cigarettes subject to the same rules that were implemented in 2007 to curb tobacco use, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said Friday. Media advertising and sale of e-cigarettes to minors will be banned in the country as concern over the implications of the product on public health increases worldwide.
The Treasury Department has issued a regulation that allows alcoholic-beverage containers to include nutrition labels, listing fat, calories and other facts, but they are not mandatory for now. Not all alcohol manufacturers are expected to add nutrition labels, but the Alcohol and Tobacco Trade and Tax Bureau is considering regulations proposed in 2007 that would make them mandatory.
Professional pastry chefs from the Napa Valley, Calif., area recently competed in a cake competition to celebrate the 50th birthday of a local medical center. The winner was pastry chef and CIA graduate Dorian O'Connell, who shares a recipe for Strawberry twist cake, made with Cointreau cream and strawberry compote.
