New technology has enabled engineers to more than double the battery efficiency of phones that transmit voice-based 4G services, according to test and measurement firm Spirent Communications. The company, which tracked VoLTE power consumption from December to March, found improved chipsets and network upgrades elicited a 122% improvement in battery drain during that period. Spirent's Rich McNally predicted that the power efficiency of Voice over Long-Term Evolution should soon match the quality on 3G-based handsets.
