Laura Kramer, director of the New York State Health Department's Wadsworth Arbovirus Laboratories, oversees research on West Nile virus and other insect-borne zoonotic diseases including the dangerous Powassan virus, which has infected 39 people in the U.S. since 2008. In 2012, 5,674 cases of West Nile virus were reported nationwide, and 286 were fatal. Kramer notes the risk of acquiring West Nile is low where she lives, but she wears repellant to protect against that and other insect-borne illnesses.
