An improving job market and a drop in the college-age population are being blamed for a 2% drop in college enrollment that primarily affected community colleges and for-profit schools in 2012-13, but is expected to extend to more four-year, nonprofit institutions this year. "There are many institutions that are on the margin, economically, and are very concerned about keeping their doors open if they can't hit their enrollment numbers," said David A. Hawkins, director of public policy and research at the National Association for College Admission Counseling.
