Prophylactic epoetin alfa eased anemia during aggressive chemotherapy for breast cancer, a study found. However, 7% of the epoetin alfa-treated patients had thrombotic events, compared with 3% in a control group. "With the exception of this risk, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents appear to be safe drugs for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced anemia or the primary prevention of anemia in patients with intensive dose-dense chemotherapy regimens," according to the report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
