Federal regulators warned carriers that it was their responsibility to protect the privacy of subscribers if the operators opted to monitor call and location information. In a ruling late last month, the Federal Communications Commission said consumers had a right to keep their data safe from third parties who could exploit security leaks to access information. But the FCC also noted that, "[W]e acknowledge that there may well be good reasons for carriers" to collect such data.
