The public will soon be able to monitor 30-day readmission rates for PCI patients on the federal Hospital Compare website. About 25% of the 1,200 hospitals participating in the American College of Cardiology's National Cardiovascular Data Registry have chosen to release Medicare fee-for-service readmission data for patients treated between January 2010 and November 2011. While some physicians expressed concerns that "unintended consequences" might result from the move, "the public has become accustomed to being more and more informed when making decisions. They look for this information," said SCAI fellow Dr. Gregory J. Dehmer, who chairs the ACC Public Reporting Advisory Group.
