The University of California on Friday nominated Janet Napolitano as its new president, effective after she steps down as the U.S. secretary of homeland security in August. The appointment, expected to be approved by the institution's Board of Regents this week, would make her the first woman to lead the 10-campus state system. "If appointed, I intend to reach out and listen to chancellors, to faculty, to students, to the state's political leaders, to regents, to the heads of the other public higher education systems," Napolitano said.
