Distracted driving is "an epidemic," said former U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who called on automakers and technology companies to go beyond voice-recognition features to curb the dangers of talking and texting on cellphones. He called on both industries to expand their efforts to educate drivers on the dangers. "We need to get that same kind of commitment from the tech industry. They're not there yet, and neither are the car companies," LaHood said.
