State mental health programs should ensure patients get both psychiatric and primary health care using a medical home model, according to Marsha Morgan, COO at Truman Medical Centers Behavioral Health in Kansas City, Mo. In its initial year, a Missouri medical home program for Medicaid patients led to $4 million in savings to the state. Kansas officials said they were seeking approval for a similar program and that safety-net clinics and mental health centers are conducting pilot initiatives.
