About 12,435 children aged 14 and younger were admitted to emergency departments each year for nonfatal choking incidents involving food, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics. Data from the 2001-2009 National Electronic Injury Surveillance System-All Injury Program showed that 62% and 55% of nonfatal, food-related choking cases involved children under 4, and boys, respectively. Hard candy was the most common culprit behind these cases, followed by other types of candy, meat, bones, and fruits and vegetables.
