Vietnam veteran Donald Crosby can go swimming without taking off his prosthetic leg, after getting outfitted with the waterproof Ottobock X3 microprocessor-controlled knee at Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond, Va. The X3, developed in collaboration with the Military Amputee Research Program, is designed to be more rugged, have a longer battery life, and sense changes in terrain and gait more smoothly than its predecessor.
