Ethics consults are an important tool for physicians in understanding family views on end-of-life care, and palliative care teams are "essential in allowing for the death to happen as painlessly as possible," according to Dr. Andrew Shuman, an ethics consultant at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, who led a study that found ethics and palliative consultations often overlap. Loyola University bioethics professor Kayhan Parsi said specialists in palliative care and clinical ethics have an "almost symbiotic" relationship.
