There were 861,597 hail-related insurance claims in 2012, or 84% more than during 2010, according to a National Insurance Crime Bureau report. During the past three years, 3,829 questionable claims involving hail damage were recorded, the bureau said. "That extra cost to the insurance company is fraud if it is done knowingly by the homeowner and/or the contractor -- and that fraud is one of the factors that drive up the cost of insurance for all consumers," said NICB's Frank Scafidi.
