The University of Florida Health Shands Hospital said eight patients in its burn unit were infected with antibiotic-resistant acinetobacter baumannii bacterial infections. The hospital has closed the burn unit for renovations and is checking other areas for contamination. Infection experts said the bacteria is becoming more common in the U.S. and can spread in hospitals through IVs, catheters and blood pressure cups.
