Researches have developed a method of making a conductive polymer though the use of gold nanoparticles embedded in polyurethane. The resulting material is flexible and durable and is being considered for electronics and medical applications. "Previous attempts to use nanoparticles for conducting films did not lead to high-performance materials because there was often an insulating shell around the nanoparticles. ... Instead of nanoparticles with thick organic shells, we used nanoparticles with very thin shells made from citrate," said Nicholas Kotov of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, leader of the project.
