The growth of paid apps has remained impressive, though free applications continue to rule the market, Tero Kuittinen writes. Paid apps sessions outpaced free apps year over year in March, according to an Apsalar study. Free apps' average revenue per user was up 38% from March 2012 to March 2013, but paid apps ARPU grew 15%, too. And though some developers raise eyebrows over "double dipping" by combining paid apps and in-app purchases, "most app vendors focusing on paid apps have jumped at the chance of maximizing in-app revenue in addition to charging a sometimes stiff download price," Kuittinen writes.
