A study found every 1,000 men with high cholesterol who took statin drugs for five years recorded a total of 163 fewer cardiac hospitalizations than their counterparts taking a placebo, and racked up about $1 million less in health costs, University of Glasgow researchers reported in the European Heart Journal. Cardiologist Rita Redberg at the University of California at San Francisco cautioned, however, that statin drugs can have side effects that should be considered.
