About 77% of families said their concerns about the economy will color their back-to-school spending this year, down from 80% last year, according to a survey from NRF and BIGinsight. About 37% said they will spend less than they did last year by shopping sales, buying more generic and store-brand products, using coupons and comparing prices in print ads and circulars. Retailers including Wal-Mart, Staples and Office Depot have already begun promoting back-to-school deals.
