The Utah Department of Transportation is building a replacement for the Interstate 84 overpass with a "geosynthetic reinforcement, soil-integrated bridge system." In this process, several layers of compressed soil are used for the bridge abutments instead of concrete. "The real advantage here is ease of construction and quickness of construction," said Tim Rose, UDOT Region 2 deputy director. This technique has saved several non-interstate bridges between 30% and 60% off traditional costs, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
