Tenured faculty that approach mentoring as coaches -- rather than gurus -- will be better at helping new faculty, according to author and speaker Kerry Ann Rockquemore. Instead of pontificating or only answering questions when asked, mentors acting as coaches can keep new faculty on task and help them build a network of support. "As a coach, the goal is to assist your mentee in developing the skills, habits and network they need to thrive. In short, it's not about you, it's all about the new faculty member," Rockquemore writes.
