Anxiety disorder was almost five times greater in people who experienced functional abdominal pain as children, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics. Researchers also noted an increased lifetime risk of depressive disorders among those who reported suffering from stomach pain as children. Patients who met the Rome III Diagnostic Questionnaire for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders criteria for abdominal pain-related functional gastrointestinal disorder had the highest risk for both anxiety disorders and depressive disorders
