A study in the journal Pain found that antioxidants could lead to restoration of GABA neurons that regulate pain impulses, which could help people with neuropathic pain. Researchers said GABA neurons are susceptible to oxidative stress and, when they are injured or die, pain impulses increase. Using mouse models, the team found that antioxidants could help restore GABA neurons.
