The antipsychotic drug haloperidol was no more effective than placebo in treating delirium in critically ill patients, according to a study in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine. Researchers tracked 141 seriously ill patients and found that the drug had no effect on length of delirium. Haloperidol also failed to cut death rates, time on ventilators or duration of hospitalization.
