A new analysis from the Government Accountability Office has found that 17 federal health IT projects face significant challenges and are in danger of experiencing cost overruns or being canceled. The report included the Defense Department and Department of Veterans Affairs' joint effort to create an integrated EHR, which cost $25 billion before the departments decided to pursue their own EHRs instead and work toward interoperability. "[T]he departments' recent change in the program's direction and history of challenges to improving their health information systems heighten concern about whether this latest initiative will be successful," according to the report.
