Advanced biofuels such as cellulosic ethanol aren't delivering on their promise, experts say. While it's conceivable that cellulosic ethanol could one day be price-competitive with gasoline, efforts to repeal the federal Renewable Fuel Standard suggest that the industry may not receive the investment needed to make that happen. "Cellulosic ethanol today is a nonstarter," says agricultural economist Wallace Tyner.
