ESPN has become the dominant TV network in influence and revenue through an "aggressively mainstream" strategy that involved doubling down on its coverage of superstars and well-known franchises, as even fans who enjoy niche sports still want to follow the biggest sports stories. "Other networks need to create hits. We don't. ... People tune in to ESPN without even knowing what's on," says Artie Bulgrin, the network's director of research.
