Pediatric urinary tract infection guidelines released by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2011 were implemented more quickly among inpatient care centers than in outpatient settings, according to data published in Pediatrics. Voiding cystourethrograms in patients ages 2 to 24 months with UTI and normal kidney and bladder ultrasound decreased from 100% to 40% in outpatient settings but was reduced from 92% to 0% in inpatient settings, the study found. The difference may be due to electronic records and ordering tools, as well as work flow-related issues.
