Very low birth weight or preterm infants are at elevated risk of hospitalization for rotavirus gastroenteritis but often do not get vaccinated upon discharge from hospital neonatal intensive care units, according to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center research. Many babies either were too old or too young for the vaccination, so researchers suggest examining relaxed age restrictions to increase vaccination rates or vaccinating some infants in the NICU.
