Many breast-feeding mothers are asked to either stop nursing their babies or forgo taking prescription medications, but the American Academy of Pediatrics reported in the journal Pediatrics that most of these drugs are safe for both mothers and their babies. In its first statement in 12 years, the group said it found no evidence that there were clinical significant concentrations of most drugs present in breast milk. However, the report noted that several narcotics and some antidepressants, antipsychotics and substance abuse treatments may pose health risks.
