Data from the Smoke-free Newborn study involving 1,774 women showed that 8% of those who quit smoking had babies with low birth weight compared with 22% among smokers. Researchers noted that nonsmokers and women who quit smoking gained more pregnancy weight than smokers, but the weight gain wasn't enough to erase the benefits of not smoking, an expert said. The findings were published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology.
