A key step toward engineered organ replacements has been marked by researchers at Singapore's Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, who have assembled organ cells and their micro-environments by embedding them in hydrogels, according to this article. The advance could provide for the quick vascularization of implanted tissue through use of the hydrogel, which also contains a supply of nutrients for embedded cells.
