Starbucks will serve locally grown and roasted coffee when it opens the first of 50 planned Colombia shops next year, and the chain has partnered with the U.S. Agency for International Development on a $3 million project to boost yields and support the country's coffee growers. Colombia exports almost all of the coffee it produces, leading to criticism by coffee drinkers who often sip brews from Ecuador and other countries. "We knew going in that when we opened in Colombia we would roast coffee there. It would be disrespectful, given the long history of farming in Colombia, to send coffee back to America to be roasted," said CEO Howard Schultz.
