The risk of developing myelodysplastic syndrome was more than three times greater for myeloma patients who receive transplants of stem cells gathered after an initial transplant compared with cases where the stem cells were collected beforehand, according to a study from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Overall, the timing of stem cell collection did not affect survival, researchers reported in the journal Leukemia.
